Project title

Deterioration of liver function in the course of long-term parenteral nutrition.

For a special patient population parenteral nutrition is essential to maintain body metabolism. Especially patients with persistent short bowl syndrome are depended on long-term parenteral nutrition. Despite personalised medicine and constant improvement of drug infusions these patients are prone to develop intestinal failure associated liver disease (IFALD) in the course of parenteral nutrition. If not diagnosed and treated early, progress to liver fibrosis or cirrhosis is likely to appear.
Thus the purpose of this project is to determine the functional effects of parenteral nutrition on the liver, as well as to identify protective and adverse effects on liver function and structure, to optimise the detection of hepatic dysfunction.
